3:7 Do not be wise in your own estimation; ¹ 

fear the Lord and turn away from evil. ²

Consecration of the Believer’s Life

12:1 Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, ⁹  by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice – alive, holy, and pleasing to God ¹⁰  – which is your reasonable service.

1 Korintus 3:18-20

3:18 Guard against self-deception, each of you. ¹¹  If someone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become foolish so that he can become wise. 3:19 For the wisdom of this age is foolishness with God. As it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness.” ¹²  3:20 And again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” ¹³

[3:7]  ² sn The second colon clarifies the first. If one fears the Lord and turns away from evil, then he is depending on the Lord and not wise in his own eyes. There is a higher source of wisdom than human insight.

As has often been quipped about this text, “The problem with living sacrifices is that they keep crawling off the altar.”
